In modern vehicles, the NOx sensor passes information to the ECU (your vehicle’s brain) about levels of NOx and carbon dioxide within the system. The ECU utilises this information to keep the engine running efficiently, to keep fuel economy at an optimum, and to help minimise toxic exhaust emissions.

If the NOx sensor fails, it’s pretty easy for experienced motor technicians to pinpoint that as the cause of the symptoms that you may have noticed and to repair the faulty sensor. Signs of a faulty NOx sensor are:

• A noticeable increase in fuel consumption
• The car goes into limp mode
• The check engine light coming on in the dash
